Exactly How Bad Are Genetically Modified Foods?

You’ve probably heard warnings about genetically modified foods. But what does the science actually show? A new large review looked at global health trends after GM crops were introduced and the findings challenge some common assumptions.

Coffee & Cancer: The Morning Habit That Might Be Working In Your Favor

For many people, coffee is simply the ritual that starts the day. But a growing body of research suggests that this daily cup may be doing far more than providing a caffeine boost. Coffee contains a remarkable collection of bioactive compounds that scientists are increasingly studying for their potential role in cancer prevention. In this week’s Monday Brief, I’m sharing a short excerpt from my upcoming book that explores what the research actually shows, and why your morning coffee might deserve a closer look.

Nutrition Strategies That Influence Cancer Biology

Want to live longer? This week's Prostate 180 shows you how. We explore several surprising areas: how your diet helps counter some of the metabolic side effects of hormone therapy, why certain plant compounds in garlic and ginseng are attracting attention from cancer researchers, and how lifestyle interventions may improve long-term health for prostate cancer survivors.

Want to Grow Your Own Broccoli Sprouts? This Short Video Will Show You How!

Aren’t broccoli sprouts expensive? If you’re buying them at the store, I would agree. Half a cup a day can easily run $4–$5, and that adds up fast. That’s exactly why I don’t buy them anymore. In the short video that goes along with this post, I’ll show you how to grow your own broccoli sprouts at home. It’s simple, inexpensive and once you do it once, you’ll wonder why you ever paid retail. A few tablespoons of seeds can give you days’ worth of fresh sprouts for pennies, not dollars.

Why Men With Prostate Cancer Are Often More Likely To Die From A Heart Attack

One of the most surprising truths in PCa care is this: for many men, the greatest threat to long-term survival is not the cancer itself, but cardiovascular disease. Large population studies have consistently shown that men diagnosed with PCa are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than from the PCa itself. Several papers in this week’s issue explore why that risk exists, how common therapies like androgen deprivation therapy often accelerate it, and why cardiovascular health should be front and center from day one of diagnosis.

Can Nocturnal Eating Cause Cancer Too?

Sounds ridiculous, yet there are definitely correlating evidence. One of the papers we review this week highlights meal timing as a modifiable behavior that may influence early carcinogenic processes long before cancer develops. The authors point to daytime-aligned eating as a potential countermeasure, not because it reduces calories, but because it restores circadian alignment and microbial rhythm.

There is a link between breast cancer and prostate cancer, but how strong is it?

One of the unexpected results of disseminating this information has been the questions and interactions I have experienced with our readers. As I have mentioned previously, I am surprised by the number of women who subscribe, and as a result, the topic of breast cancer comes up. Prostate cancer is the male version of breast cancer, for lack of a better description. Hormones and genetics drive both and there are striking similarities between the two, including the number of patients affected.

Managing androgen deprivation and how to improve your bone health

This week we focus on multiple therapies like adding enzalutamide to your androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), also called doublet therapy, the benefits of citrus fruits to strengthen your bones during ADT and melatonin to combat the hot flashes that come with ADT. Just for fun, I added a paper paying tribute to honeybee products. Every year, I see fewer and fewer honey bees. They are so important and at the same time, so overlooked.

The Smallest Vegetable with the Biggest Effect on Your Prostate

Broccoli sprouts may be small, but their biological impact is outsized. Packed with sulforaphane at levels that dwarf mature broccoli, these sprouts favorably affect oxidative stress, inflammation and cellular defense: all areas directly related to PSA behavior and prostate biology. Want to know why broccoli sprouts have earned serious attention in prostate research? Read on.

Minimally Invasive PCa Diagnosis: Options Beyond PSA

Many of this week’s papers focus on a question I hear often: What's the best way to understand what’s really going on without invasive testing? The research highlights newer diagnostic approaches including advanced imaging, AI-assisted ultrasound, two laser-based techniques. All designed to improve accuracy while reducing unnecessary procedures. Together these papers point toward a clear shift: more precise, less disruptive ways to diagnose PCa.

Why Prostate 180 Exists

Today is World Cancer Day. For me, this isn’t just an abstract awareness date on the calendar. Cancer has reshaped how I think, how I practice and how I show up for others walking this road. Today is about acknowledging everyone affected by this disease and recommitting to better information, better conversations and real support for those who need it most. We meet angels in our path every day. Today especially, make a point to be an angel in someone's life.

Cooked tomatoes in olive oil are THE BEST food for your prostate!

There, I said it. Tomatoes don’t get nearly the credit they deserve. Lycopene, the deep red carotenoid that gives tomatoes their color, has been consistently linked to prostate health in clinical studies. Perhaps even more interesting, how you eat tomatoes turns out to be just as important as how often you eat them. When tomatoes are cooked, their cell walls break down and lycopene becomes more bioavailable (more easily digested). Add olive oil and absorption improves even further, since lycopene is fat-soluble. In other words, a slow-simmered tomato sauce made with olive oil isn’t just comfort food, it’s one of the most efficient dietary ways to deliver lycopene to your body.

Which Works Better: Radioactive "Seeding" or Prostate Surgery?

So, I guess I was getting a bit overzealous because the algorithms were telling me that the issues are getting too long. Time to reel it in. Some very interesting papers to share with you this week discussing such things as whether it's better to "seed" your prostate with radioactive material or remove it. There's also one that's much darker, dealing with the suicide rate of men diagnosed with PCa. Sorry to be a downer, but I felt like this was a very important topic to bring out into the open.

If you have had a prostate biopsy, the next step is getting your Gleason Score

One of the first numbers most men hear after a prostate biopsy is the Gleason score. For many, that single number immediately triggers fear. I want to slow this down and explain what the Gleason score actually means, because understanding it can change the conversation.

#3 - The European Code Against Cancer Offers 14 Ways to Reduce Your Risk

You know what's interesting? Very few women subscribe to this newsletter (that's not the interesting part - I would expect the exact opposite if this were a newsletter focused on breast cancer). What is interesting is that when I post individual articles from Prostate 180 on the socials, the comments, likes, etc. come almost exclusively from women. I'm thinking I chose the wrong name?

Let's start at the beginning: what is PSA and what does it do?

For most men, everything gets real when their PSA number goes up. That’s the moment the invisible gland none of us ever think about suddenly becomes a threat. If you are reading this newsletter, then it is likely that things started getting serious when your doctor did a PSA screening and yours was elevated to the point of concern.

Well, the week's almost over. That means it's time for the second issue of Prostate 180. As you probably noticed, I squeezed in a Monday Brief this week. While it's extremely powerful to know what is being published in scientific journals right now, there's a LOT of incredible information already out there to share with you. Who knows, the Monday Brief may turn out to not be so brief after all. Onward and upward.

Welcome to Prostate 180!

Almost 100 research papers are published EVERY WEEK on the topic of prostate cancer! This includes new treatment recommendations, new medications being tested, studies on nutrition (what to eat and what not to eat) and trends in PSA screenings. It can be a full time job just keeping up with all the new information. Dr. Christopher Walinski (a dentist and respected researcher fighting PSA rise and metastasis) selects only the most important papers and delivers a concise summary to your email every Thursday. Because of my love of food and cooking, I will emphasize foods you should add to your diet and which foods you should try your best to limit. There are no "always" or "never" situations. Just do your best! "If I had to create an overarching statement on all the advice we have given over the years, it would be - Everything in moderation!"Note from Dr. Chris: There is a section at the bottom for your comments. Please send me suggestions on how this could be improved to be more helpful. And, please share with those you know and love who might benefit from my research. Thank you so much!!
