Let’s Grow Some Sprouts!!
My Simple Broccoli Sprout Checklist
(The system I actually use)
If you’ve ever wanted to eat broccoli sprouts every day but felt intimidated, this checklist makes it almost foolproof.
What You Need (One-Time Setup)
☐ Organic broccoli sprouting seeds (not garden seed)
☐ 2–4 wide-mouth quart mason jars
☐ Fine-mesh sprouting lids
☐ Filtered water
☐ A countertop near a window
Day 0 — Soak the seeds
☐ Add 1.5 tablespoons of seeds to the jar and cover with mesh lid
☐ Cover the seeds with filtered water
☐ Soak 8–10 hours
☐ Then, drain completely
Days 1–4 — Rinse & Drain (Twice Daily)
Morning:
☐ Add enough water to wet the seeds
☐ Drain extremely well
Evening:
☐ Rinse again
☐ Drain again
After each rinse:
☐ Store jar on its side or at a slight angle (Do not store the jar on its bottom or top)
☐ Make sure no water pools at the bottom
☐ Keep out of direct sunlight, but I’m a fan of indirect sunlight. Some recipes call for no light, but I want my sprouts as green as possible.
Sprouts should always smell fresh and clean, never musty
Day 4–6 — Leaves Turn Green
☐ Leaves begin to turn green
☐ Final rinse
☐ Refrigerate. If you need to refrigerate for more than a few days, switch to a closed lid or the sprouts will start to dry out. Alternatively, rinse the refrigerated sprouts every few days to keep them fresh.
Daily Use
☐ Eat ½ cup per day
☐ Chew well or lightly chop before eating
☐ Add to Eggs, Salads, Smoothies, Sandwiches
The “Never Run Out” Rotation
☐ Start a new jar every 2-3 days
☐ Keep 2–3 jars going at all times
☐ Harvest one jar while another is growing
This creates a steady supply with almost no thinking. With this system, you have to be diligent with eating the sprouts daily or they will start piling up! A little each day is better than a lot all at once.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
☐ Too many seeds per jar
☐ Poor drainage
☐ Letting jars sit upright
Good luck and have fun!
